CO 130: Arguably the Best

“Is cereal a soup?” “Is college worth the investment?” “Is capital punishment unethical?” “Should we adopt Medicare for All?” Debate and argumentation are all around us. Unfortunately, many average citizens and world leaders alike have trouble articulating their ideas respectfully and discussing important topics without allowing emotions to take over. Debate can be the starting point for progress, innovation, and a powerful democratic voice. Being able to express your own ideas and respond to others’ is what will set you apart as a potential hire, an engaged citizen, and a community leader. In this course, we learn the basics of argumentation, refutation, and general communication skills. You will observe and participate in debates over different topics – some fun, some serious – all while establishing a network of connections to help you succeed. If debate sounds scary to you, I encourage you to join this class. You will experience a welcoming environment where you can try new things with low-stakes costs. And you might even discover a new passion!
