What do you know (or think you know) about Cuba? Common associations in the U.S. include Castro, communism, Cold War, classic cars, and cigars. Cuba is one of our closest neighbors, yet relations between the U.S. are historically fraught. This course introduces you to Cuba’s fascinating history, society, art, and culture and explores connections between the U.S. and Cuba. Illinois College is unique for its longstanding partnerships with the University of Pinar del Río and other institutions in western Cuba, and this course can lead to opportunities for you to travel to Cuba. Taught in English; prior study of Spanish not required.
