RE 174: The Stuff of Religion

Credits 4

What things do we associate with religion? Why do we think about religion as something that is immaterial? In this class, we’ll explore the “stuff” of religion: the bodies, objects, and things that make religion tangible. From kneeling in prayer in a mosque, to recording marriages in the family Bible, to burning paper offerings during the Chinese ghost festival, religion in part of our physical world even as it looks beyond it to questions of meaning and value. Through this class, you’ll be asked to think about how the everyday manifestations of religion influence the ways we think about life, death, and what it means to exist as an embodied being.
