The achievements and contributions of Illinois College students are formally recognized at graduation. In case of the untimely death of a student who has made substantial progress toward a degree, it is important that the college recognizes the work of this individual, celebrates their life, and honors their academic achievements. Upon written request from a family member, the Office of the Registrar in consultation with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of the President may recommend conferral of the posthumous degree under the following policy requirements:
- At least 75 % of the student’s academic requirements are already complete and the student is in good academic standing at the time of death.
- The student should have been enrolled in coursework at the time of his/her death.
The student’s name will appear in the graduation program. The student’s family will decide if the name will be read and the degree is to be conferred at the graduation ceremony privately.
The degree will be marked as awarded posthumously for the academic record, including the academic transcript, and a diploma noting the degree will be available to family.
