Online Course Policies for Campus-Based Students

There are several circumstances under which on-campus students may take courses online as part of their academic program. In summer, because it's outside the regular academic year, students may take courses online at IC for an additional charge. During the academic year (fall and spring semesters) students may take fully online classes as part of their regular course load under the following circumstances.

  • Students must have earned 45 credit hours and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. Transfer students should successfully complete at least one semester at IC before taking online courses; exceptions must be approved by either the Registrar or the Dean of Faculty.
  • In order to take an online course as part of the regular semester load, the course must be required for the student's program and not available on campus in a reasonable timeframe for the student to take the course on campus. (A student's desire to graduate early is not a basis for approval).
  • Students are normally limited to one fully online course per semester; exceptions must be approved first by the student's academic advisor and then by either the Registrar or the Dean of Faculty. Students in the Financial Planning major may take up to two online courses a semester in their junior and senior years due to the number of online courses required to sit for the Certified Financial Planner exam.
  • For majors or concentrations requiring online coursework, a minimum of a 'C' grade in all pre-requisite courses is required in addition to a GPA of 2.0 both overall and in the major before students may enroll in online courses. Students who do not maintain the minimum GPAs may be prohibited from taking additional online classes and may therefore have to change their major.
